In J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium, the palantíri, also known as the Seven Stones or the Seven Seeing-stones, were objects used for communication over vast distances.  Photography, like the seeing stones, can communicate the mundane reality of everyday life - and the beauty of it - in a way that is understood universally regardless of distance, place, or time.
